Your understanding is right as status quo means court is asking to keep the situation as it is. but when we say status quo qua means keep the condition as the last stage of the present one.

example like you and your neighbour had a common wall. He increase the height and built 2 ft high wall. you go to court. and if court order status quo means the wall will remain as it is. but if court order status quo qua means the 2 ft extra wall has to be demolished and make as old condition.

When status quo can be granted?

When ordering Status-Quo the court must specify in unambiguous terms what Status-Quo means. He must specify whether Plaintiff or defendant are in possession. A situation of ambiguity and doubt can have dangerous consequences. Such an order is not appropriate. 29 Jun 2023

Status quo is basically ordered to prevent third party interest in property. This is in relation to leasing, selling or mortgaging the property, giving it away, willing to do so, or doing any act to transfer an interest in property in accordance with the Transfer of Property Act.

The status quo is the situation that existed immediately before the dispute or the issue which caused the dispute. The status quo is maintained until either the dispute has been resolved or the dispute has been brought before the Commission.
