Tenant absconded from last one month

My tenant has absconded from last one month with his family.Didnt paid the rent also.We are trying to reach them over the phone, but not able to connect with them.He left all his belongings and locked the house.
In this case, what we need to do.Can we lock the house with a lock?
Give an intimation in the nearest police station and seek their help.. . it's better to intimate to the police in written format so that u will be having a proof that u also approached the police since the house was been locked from longer time..
