Link Aadhaar with PAN Card

Linking of Aadhaar Card with PAN Card is a very simple process and the for the convenience of the Card holders, Government has provided various ways to link Aadhaar with PAN card. Linking of Aadhar Card with PAN is mandatory because an Individual's income tax return (ITR) can not be processed if Aadhar is not linked with PAN. Also, it is mandatory if you have to carry out a banking transaction of/above Rs 50,000. Hence, Linking of Aadhaar with PAN makes it easy for the Government as well as the Card holder for various processes.
 

Linking PAN Card to Aadhaar Card Online through e-Filing Website

 An Individual can link his/her Aadhar Card online with PAN Card online through the following procedure :

  1. Log on to Income Tax e-Filing website https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home to link Aadhar with PAN.

  2. Select the `LINK AADHAAR` option below Quick links.

  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number in the form.

  4. Enter your name as mentioned in your Aadhaar card.

  5. In case, only Year of Birth is mentioned in your Aadhar, You need to tick the square.

  6. Enter the Captcha code given in the below image.

  7. Click on `LINK AADHAAR` option.

  8. A pop-up message will appear that your Aadhaar-PAN card linking is successfully done.

 

Linking Aadhaar with PAN by Sending a SMS

 You can also link your Aadhar Card with PAN easily by sending a SMS. Following are the steps :
 

  • Open your Messages Icon in your phone, Type a new message in the following format.

  • UIDPAN <12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>

  • Send this message to either 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number.

  • For example : If your Aadhaar number is 1234-5678-9010 and your PAN is QWERT1234S, than you have to type UIDPAN 123456789010 QWERT1234S and send the message to either 567678 or 56161.

 

Unable to Link PAN with Aadhaar? Here’s What to Do

The process of linking Aadhaar with PAN is mandatory before the deadline given by the INcome Tax Department, otherwise they will be deactivated by IT Department. For linking Aadhar and PAN, the name of the Applicant should be the same on both PAN card as well as on the Aadhar card. In case, there is some spelling mismatch/errors in any of these, the linking process can not be completed. You have to get you name corrected and only after correction, you can link your Aadhaar with PAN.

  • In Case, Name in PAN Card is incorrect, You can change it over the NSDL website. You can get it changed by the following steps :

  1. Log on to the  e-filing website of NSDL at https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html

Select the ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’ option from the Application type drop down menu

  1. Select the `Individual` option under category option

  2. Fill up your personal details

  3. Click on `Submit` option

  4. Make payment and submit your form online after Aadhaar e-KYC

  5. Your updated PAN will be sent to your registered address

  6. Once you receive your PAN card and confirmed by NSDL over a mail, you can link your PAN with Aadhaar Card

-  In Case, Name is Aadhaar Card is incorrect, You can get it changed online on UIDAI`s website or by visiting any Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Following are the 2 ways and steps to get it changed :
 

  • By Visiting the UIDAI website online

  1. Log on to the official UIDAI website https://uidai.gov.in/

  2. Go Under Aadhar updation option

  3. Enter your Aadhar card details and security code

  4. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number

  5. OTP is the only requirement if you need to make changes in the name only

  6. In case you have to modify other details such as gender and date of birth, you have to send the supporting documents for updation.

  7. Once your request is approved and the name is corrected on Aadhar, You can link your PAN with Aadhaar Card.
     

  • By Visiting the Aadhar Enrolment centre :

  1. Along with the Aadhaar card, carry a self-attested copy of your Identity as well as Address proof

  2. Fill up the Aadhar Enrolment form

  3. Submit the form along with the required documents

  4. You will get an acknowledgement slip from the officer with the Update request number

  5. The URN given on slip, can be used to track the status of the update request

  6. Once your update request has been completed and the name is corrected on Aadhar, You can link your PAN with Aadhaar Card.
     

Importance of Linking PAN Card with Aadhar Card

Linking of PAN Card with the AAdhar Card is very much important for the economy as well as to all the PAN Card holders. Following are the reasons for the same :

  • All PAN Cards will be deactivated after March 2018, if they are not linked with Aadhar Card. This rule was given by the Government and makes it mandatory to link PAN with Aadhar.

  • Income Tax Return form will not be processed if AN card is not linked with Aadhar Card.

  • Linking of PAN with Aadhaar will help in tackling the problem of multiple PAN cards issued in the same name.

  • The user will get a summarised detail of taxes levied on him for future reference.

Q. When is the Aadhaar-PAN linking not compulsory?
A. Aadhar-PAN linking is exempted , only if:

  • You are an NRI

  • Residents of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir

  • Foreign nationals residing in India.

  • Senior citizens who are more than 80 years of age at any time during the financial year

 
Q. If I don’t have Aadhaar. Can I still e-file my tax return?
A.  Yes, you can file your tax returns but it will not be processed until and unless your Aadhar is linked with PAN Card. But , in case you have your Enrolment number , you can link it with your PAN for the time being and your e-Return will be processed this year. However, you will have to link the PAN with Aadhaar at a later stage.
 
Q. Do NRIs need Aadhaar card to e-file?
A. NRIs are exempt from quoting their Aadhaar while filing their income tax e-returns.

A. Right now, there are only two processes. The holder has to link his cards only through one of these.
