April 02, 2019
By Advocate Chikirsha Mohanty

A large number of countries across the globe use the Unique Identity (UID) system by which every citizen get a number that contains all the details relevant to their identity. The Indian Government has also introduced a similar system known as Aadhaar, which is a Unique Identity number given to the citizens of India. The government aims at boosting the development of the Indian economy through Aadhaar by offering several benefits to the civilians.

For the purpose of creating the Unique Identification Number or Aadhaar, the Government of India established the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) in January 2009 which operates under the guidance of the Central government. The UIDAI is responsible for developing and issuing the Aadhaar card to the Indian residents and also to collect their biometric as well as demographic details. The data collected by the UIDAI is then stored in a centralized database system called the UID database. The chief data center where the Aadhaar data storage takes place is situated at the Industrial Model Township (IMT) in Manesar, Haryana. The 12-digit Unique Identification Number (UIN) or Aadhaar is issued simultaneously to the Indian citizens after the data has been stored.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar card is a 12-digit Unique Identification Number (UIN) issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) after satisfying the verification process laid down by UIDAI. It is an individual verification system which helps the government of India to provide targeted services to Indian residents while enhancing the safety and security of the nation. This kind of a verification system is popular in many nations such as the United States of America and has been adopted by them as a Unique Identification for its citizens. For instance, in the USA their Unique Identification Number is referred to as Social Security Number which is a nine-digit number issued to both permanent as well as temporary residents who work in the United States of America.

Details on Aadhaar card

The Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India contains various details. Some of the details are printed on the Aadhaar card, whereas, other details are stored in the Aadhaar’s database which can be accessed through proper channels. Details mentioned on the Aadhaar card has been listed below:

  • Name

  • Date of Birth

  • Aadhaar Number

  • Gender

  • Photograph

  • Residential Address

  • QR code representing the Aadhaar number

Details stored in the Aadhaar database has been listed below:

  • Iris Scan

  • Fingerprints

It is a general belief that the Aadhaar card is a mandatory document that everyone must obtain and the card is what every individual is required to acquire. However, this notion is a myth as Aadhaar is not just a mere documentation but the number which is issued along with the card is of greater value. The Aadhaar number is the key identity of the particular individual and in order to avail the benefits associated with Aadhaar, the Aadhaar number alone is sufficient.

The Aadhaar Card has many benefits that can be enjoyed by the people residing in India once they decide to enroll for the same. Though Aadhaar card registration is not compulsory, however, one can avail numerous benefits by obtaining an Aadhaar card.  Most of the banking schemes and income tax related forms need Aadhaar details to be furnished.

The purpose of the Aadhaar card is to make it easier for the public to avail the subsidies of the government and have a number, which works as address proof and identity proof. The other reason that the Indian Government has voted for the formation of this was to assist the forces curbing illegal immigration to the nation. Aadhaar is not just a card, which can replace the requirement for the passports and licenses of drivers. It does not even recognize an individual as a family’s part nor can any person have more than one Aadhaar number.

The main aim to formulate the Aadhaar card has always been to make a universal and unique identity card for the citizens of India that would assist in negating the need for different documents to apply for several services, and to avail benefits under various government schemes such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan and PAHAL DBTL.
