Tenant without a lease not paying from last 4*5 months what to do

i am a hindu. I live in a town in indore district. We have a lent our basement to a person, also a hindu, for running a dhaba for last 7-8 months. He is not paying the rent for last 4-5 months. We do not have a written agreement as people in rural area do not think them as important. Is there any legal way that I can get him to give money? What will the police do if I go to them? I have told him on 10th august that either pay half of the money by the end of this month or leave. He said he will see if he could arrange money. The amount is 20000+. If he doesnt give the money by the end of this month and decides to leave, then how can I get my money back?
