Company made deposited extra salary in my account now can they recover

Company is deposited extra salary for 1 month. Then when i was leaving the company, they asked to return the salary deposit and if not done they will not provide me my relieving letter and would take legal action against me. Can they do that?
Assuming you are in a private sector, the company can hold back the leaving letter and take a legal action against you if the transfer was done by mistake and you are refusing to return it. It is advisable you return the extra amount that was transferred to your account by mistake.
