Domestic violence in India is a serious issue that affects many women, often at the hands of their husbands, in-laws, or other relatives. It includes physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse. Physical Abuse – Beating, slapping, burning, pushing, or causing physical harm. Emotional/Psychological Abuse – Verbal abuse, insults, threats, isolation, and humiliation. Sexual Abuse – Marital rape, forcing sexual acts, or any form of sexual assault. Economic Abuse – Controlling finances, denying access to money, or preventing a woman from working. Even if the abuse is from in-laws, brothers, uncles, or any other family members, it is legally considered domestic violence under Indian law.

Domestic violence and abuse by relatives is governed by the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA) in India. This Act provides remedies to women who face physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, or economic abuse by family members, including husbands, in-laws, or other relatives. If you are facing such abuse, you can take the following steps: File a Complaint: Approach the nearest police station or a Protection Officer appointed under the PWDVA. They will assist in filing a Domestic Incident Report (DIR) and initiate legal proceedings. File an Application in Court: You can seek protection orders, residence orders (to stay in your marital/shared household without being evicted), monetary relief, or custody orders if children are involved. Contact Support Services: NGOs, women’s organizations, and helplines provide counseling and legal assistance. Remember, domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse; even mental harassment and denial of basic needs are covered. Legal remedies are available, and you are entitled to protection and dignity under the law. It’s crucial to document instances of abuse (e.g., medical reports, messages) to strengthen your case. Seek immediate legal support to ensure your safety.
