What to do if someone forges your signature and name ?
17-Jul-2024 (In Criminal Law)
Signature forgery is a serious criminal offense in India (punishable under Sections 463, 464, 465, 467, and 471 of the Indian Penal Code), and you should act fast if you discover it.
Here's a quick action plan if your signature has been forged:
-
Collect Evidence-Secure the forged document and keep copies. If possible, get handwriting/signature expert verification.
-
File a Police Complaint / FIR-Report immediately at your local police station under IPC sections for forgery and fraud.
-
Inform Relevant Institutions-Notify your bank, registrar office, or any authority involved (so they freeze or halt any further action on the forged document).
-
Consult a Lawyer-For guidance on filing a civil suit (if property or money is involved) alongside the criminal complaint.
-
Monitor Your Records-Keep track of all bank accounts, property documents, and other assets to prevent further misuse.
