False report submitted by police during Passport verification

23-Nov-2023 (In Criminal Law)
AFTER RECEIVING MY PASSPORT I GOT A CALL FROM POLICE STATION TO COME AND SHOW DOCUMENTS AS A PROOF OF MY PRESENT ADDRESS(WHERE I AM STAYING FOR LAST THREE YEARS). I WENT THERE FOUR TIMES DEPENDING ON HIS VARIOUS DEMANDS, SUBMITTED ELECTRIC BILLS, ADHAR, VOTER ID, DRIVING LICENSE. THEN AFTER 3-4 WEEKS HE CALLED ME AGAIN AND TOLD ME TO TO PROVIDE ID PROOF OF MY WIFE AS MY WIFE'S NAME WAS ALSO ADDED IN MY PASSPORT APPLICATION DURING REISSUE. AS MY WIFE WAS OUT OF STATION I COULDN'T PROVIDE THE DOCUMENTS AND TOLD HIM THAT IT CAN BE PROVIDED AFTER 3-4 WEEKS ONCE SHE RETURNS. AT THAT TIME HE THREATENED ME THAT HE WILL SUBMIT BAD FEEDBACK ABOUT MY CASE IF I CANNOT PROVIDE MY WIFE'S DOCUMENTS IMMEDIATELY. PROBABLY HE WAS EXPECTING BRIBE WHICH I REFUSED TO GIVE. THEN AFTER ONE WEEK I GOT THE SMS THAT "POLICE HAS SUBMITTED ADVERSE REPORT ON MY CURRENT ADDRESS". AFTER INQUIRY IN RPO I CAME TO KNOW THAT THE POLICE HAS SUBMITTED HIS REPORT STATING THAT I HAVEN'T SUBMITTED ANY DOCUMENTS FOR ADDRESS

We are extremely sorry to hear this sad corruptive practice you had to face which brought you to our portal. Sadly it is no more uncommon for these policemen to ask for bribe as they forget that being government servants it is their duty to verify the details of the person. They consider it as a favour they are doing to the applicants and hence claim the money as their right.

The Passport Seva website of Ministry of External Affairs (http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/online/vigilance) clearly says, "Don't pay bribes. In case of demand of bribe by any Passport official in respect of any Passport-related service, you may immediately contact the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Ministry at the address mentioned...".

Well, you can file a complaint at the Lokayukt. Though you can as well approach a senior Police officer of the rank of ACP or DCP of the same Police Station; we shall highly recommend you to lodge an online complaint at http://www.mea.gov.in/lodge-complaint.htm addressing the Chief Vigilance Officer. Sadly the vigilance complaints cannot be filed anonymously so you shall have to share your contact details along with your complaint.

In addition, to encourage your bravery we would recommend you to read this short story https://www.quora.com/How-does-one-teach-a-lesson-to-the-police-official-who-demands-bribe-for-passport-verification

Have a great day :)

There must be a reason why the Police have submitted false report which you are not aware, first talk to the Police Officer and who was supposed to submit the report, if he refuses to do so then make a formal complaint to the Higher Officials of the Police Department stating all the facts and requesting him to conduct an inquiry to find out why his sub ordinate Police Official have submitted false report.
Thanks.
