right of child custody of 08 years old in case of divorce

We have one child of 08 years. my husband threatening me for divorce for one and other reasons since four to five years. I tried my best to be together. But now it is very difficult to be together. If we got separated, right of keeping the child will be with mother or father. Kindly guide me I am a helpless mother.
