Landlord refuses to accept possession of rented flat

I was staying at this flat.the electricity connection was disconnected by BSES saying the meter was tampered with.i gave notice to the landlord and vacated the premises when he refused to get the electricity connected.ow he has sued me saying I didn't give possession and liable to pay rent till the time he accepts the possession.Also he refuses to give my security back.i have already given the keys to him.
