Is it legal on the part of the employer to seek for original documents

a college is asking for my original certificates till I am under their employment as Asst professor. There is no other bond though I am ready to fill one. Is it legal to keep original docs? They are ready to give acknowledgement for the same. But is it legal? What guarantee that they will not harass me when I want to leave them, or in between if I require my documents.
Some collage or university follow this step and take the original documents. Now it's not clear that what condition they have put before you so better you ask them what to do and not do list and condition if you leave their services in middle then only you can get the appropriate answer.
