What is ECR Category in Passport

ECR stands for Emigration Check Required in the passport. People who have not cleared the 10th standard fall under this category. You can find the stamp with ECR or 'Emigration Check Required' written in your passport if you belong to this category. It is important to verify this category of passport if you are planning a trip abroad.

The following countries ask for Emigration Check Required or ECR in the passport:

Brunei, Yemen, Indonesia, Saudi Arab, Iraq, Thailand, Jordan, UAE, Lebanon, Syria, Malaysia, Sudan, Libya, Bahrain, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Oman, Qatar.

However, Emigration Check Required or ECR is not necessary if you are traveling to the above-mentioned countries and if you fall under the following categories:

  • Income tax payer

  • Official and Diplomatic passport holder

  • People who have passed the 10th grade

  • Professional degree holder

  • Gazetted officer

  • Children below the age of 18 years with one or both parents

  • People who are above 50 years of age.

  • People holding a degree or diploma in polytechnic

  • People who hold a PR visa for the US, UK, and Australia

What is an ECNR Passport?

ECNR passport stands for Emigration Check Not Required in the passport. People who have cleared the 10th standard will fall under the ECNR category. You can find the ECNR stamp or the 'Emigration Check Not Required' written in your passport if you fall under this category.
