My 498a is quashed. Can I file defamation case?

My divorce case is over. While divorce case was running, my ex-wife had filed false 498a case on June 2022 on me and my whole family. After filing the case, they had published dowry harassment in Local news paper in Mysore and mentioned all our names. I had applied for quash in High court of Karnataka. And court has quashed the whole 498a FIR on Feb 2024. Can I file for defamation on ex wife and her father? Which is better - Civil or Criminal? Will it be of any help?
