Can summons be sent via email to a person

Hi Sir Madam, Is it possible to send summons via email to a person or do they have to be received in person?
Dear Querist, it all depends on court to court. recently in a Bombay high court matter, summons by way of whatsapp was allowed. It would depend whether the court permits you to issue a summon by email or any other mode.
