Blackmailed by a main over past affair

27-May-2026 (In Cyber Crime Law)
“I am being blackmailed by a man (Indian Air Force officer) with old Instagram chat screenshots. He is threatening to send them to my family and company and forcing me to help with his divorce. I have some threatening messages saved. I don’t want full police case right now. I just want a strong legal notice sent to him to stop all contact immediately. Please advise the cheapest and fastest way with minimum involvement from my side.”

You may initially proceed with a strongly worded legal notice demanding that he immediately cease all contact, intimidation, blackmail, threats and circulation of any private communications or screenshots. Preserve all chats, call records, screenshots and threatening messages in original form without deletion. Threatening to circulate personal chats to coerce or pressure you may attract serious civil and criminal consequences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act and other applicable laws. His official position does not grant immunity from legal action. If your immediate objective is quick relief with minimal personal involvement, issuance of a formal advocate notice is often the fastest and least intrusive first step. In many cases, such notice itself acts as a deterrent, particularly where the individual is employed in disciplined government service. However, if the threats continue after notice, you should be prepared to escalate the matter through an appropriate cybercrime complaint, police complaint and, if necessary, complaint before the concerned departmental authorities. Do not negotiate under pressure or provide any statement merely because of intimidation.

If the person is threatening to share your private chats or screenshots with your family, employer, or others to force you to do something against your will, it may amount to criminal intimidation, extortion, harassment, and cyber offences. Preserve all messages, screenshots, emails, and call records. A strongly worded legal notice can be sent demanding that he immediately cease all contact, threats, and dissemination of your personal information. If the conduct continues despite notice, you may then consider approaching the Cyber Crime Cell or the police. Do not delete any evidence and avoid engaging in negotiations under pressure.

Based on the facts stated by you, the conduct described appears to amount to blackmail, criminal intimidation, harassment, and misuse of your private communications. As you do not presently wish to initiate a police complaint, the fastest and most cost-effective remedy would be issuance of a strong legal notice directing him to immediately stop all threats, coercion, and communication with you, and to refrain from sharing any private chats, screenshots, or information with your family, employer, or any third party. Please preserve all screenshots, messages, and other evidence in your possession. For detailed legal assistance and issuance of a legal notice.
