Can witness summoned at night report at PS in the morning

A senior citizen was been visited by the police at 11 00 pm in reference to a riot case in 1977 in which he is a witness. He was informed they would take him with them and he shall stay at the police station for the entire night and then he shall be taken to the court by them Can he report at the police station in the morning.
If it only a summon by court than police only informed to the witness not detained whole night in police station. But if it's NBW by court than police can arrest and detained whole night but withing 24 hrs police present in the court.
