Hello,nI had acquired a plot as an investment with the help of my brother-in law back around 2016 in Karnal, Haryana. While I had to leave back to the US, he agreed to buy the plot on my behalf. The money was to come from selling a house I had in Karnal. I trusted him greatly. In 2019, when I was back in India, I came to know that he put my sister's (his wife) name on the house as well. He claimed it was because I wasn't present and it make the transaction an easier process. He further asked me to sign a general power of attorney. Again, I trusted him blindly. In 2022, my husband salary took a big hit due to COVID, and we agreed to sell the plot. When we contacted few agents back in Karnal, we found out my plot had already been sold 3 years back. When I confronted my brother in law, he said he needed the money. I was shocked and fell into depression. Since then he has not returned the money despite many promises. What are my legal options? I feel hopeless.

Greetings for the day, In you case it will be pertinent for you to file a civil suit as soon as possible to get the sale deed canceled by which your brother in law sold out your share in the plot. Also you have to initiate criminal proceedings against your brother in law and sister as well. Apart from these, there are no other ways for you to recover your money.
