Hit a student am I liable to pay the medical expenses incurred

Actually I take private Tution.during exams I hit a 6th grade student with a belt but he put is hand in between .his finger got bended and since not closing.doctors are saying that the finger is fracture and needs correction.parents are insisting to pay the amount. Should I pay the amount???
Forget legally but I think morally, you should take care of the treatment of the child. He's only 12.
