Is it necessary to get police verification before share certificate

Hi, My father in law has gifted his commercial property in Mumbai to her daughter who resides in the US. We have done the registration and all other formalities and have requested the society to transfer the share certificate into my sister in laws name. They are now asking for the police verification of her. Is it right to do the same.
As per information provided by you. Your father in law gifted his commercial property to her daughter. Which is nothing but transfer of ownership. In your case it seems that society not satisfied with the residential proffe provided by your sister in law. Might be due to this reason society asking the police verification.
