Maintainance Demand Query of separation of couples under Hindu Law

Situation: separation since 10yrs (not divorse)
Religion : Hindu Law
Financial Position : Lower Middleclass
Wife wants maintainance charges. The only major son lives with father. By any chance will the major son be held liable to pay for the maintainance charges where the husband I.e. father of the son is not earning and not capable to earn due to mental issues ??? Kindly help us by clarifying. Also enlighten us with other related relevant facts or point to be noted if any.
