Legal Clarification on Newborn Child Name Change, Surname and Future D
14-Jun-2026 (In Family Law)
I seek legal guidance regarding my newborn son’s birth certificate in Karnataka. My son’s birth has already been registered and the birth certificate was issued recently. The current certificate contains the surname “Bhajantri”. My wife and I are considering changing our son’s name to either “Vivek Mallikarjun” or “Vivek Vidyasagar”.
We belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. The parents’ names in the birth certificate are:
Father: Mallikarjun Bhajantri
Mother: Sumalatha Bhajantri
Dear Sir
Step by Step Process
Affidavit Preparation The father or parents must execute a name change affidavit on a non judicial stamp paper The affidavit must clearly state the current name of the child as per the birth certificate the parents details and the proposed new name of the child It should also state the reason for the change
Newspaper Publication Publish a notification regarding the child name change in two local newspapers One publication must be in a leading daily English newspaper and the other must be in a prominent regional Kannada daily newspaper Retain copies of these newspaper advertisements as proof
Official Gazette Notification Submit an application to the compilation officer at the Karnataka Government Central Press in Bengaluru for publishing the name change notification in the Karnataka Gazette You will need to submit the affidavit copies of the newspaper advertisements the existing birth certificate and identity proofs of the parents Along with this the prescribed government fee must be paid
just approach the office with affidavit and application and request to change if they do not agree you have to file a case in court and get an order for change in name, but if the change is to be done within a year from birth it is allowed or they will probably ask you to bring a decre from court and you can approach the court and get the order and get the name changed.
