Divorce papers hard copy needed for court marriage. soft copy i have
04-Jun-2026 (In Family Law)
I am divorcing. I intend to get married again. I have a soft, true copy of the divorce decree. Do I need a hard copy to get married in court?
For a court marriage after divorce, proof of dissolution of the previous marriage is required. A soft copy of the divorce decree may be useful for reference; however, the Marriage Officer may require a certified hard copy of the divorce decree for verification and record purposes. It is advisable to obtain a certified copy from the concerned court and verify the specific document requirements with the Marriage Registrar’s office where the marriage is proposed to be registered.

In India, for a subsequent marriage after divorce, the marriage officer or registrar will generally require proof that your previous marriage has legally ended.
A certified copy of the divorce decree/judgment issued by the court is usually the safest document to produce. Whether a mere soft copy is accepted depends on the authority conducting the marriage and the local practice.
In practice:
A scanned or downloaded copy may be sufficient for preliminary verification.
For registration or solemnization of marriage, authorities often ask for the original certified copy or a certified hard copy of the divorce decree.
If your decree was issued through an e-court system and bears a verifiable digital signature or QR code, some authorities may accept it, but requirements vary.
Before proceeding, you should also ensure:
The divorce decree has become final and there is no stay order.
Any appeal period requirements applicable to your case have been complied with.
I recommend obtaining at least one certified hard copy from the court that granted the divorce. It can help avoid delays when registering the new marriage.
