Without a registered marriage certificate, you often can’t: update Aadhaar with husband’s name/address, claim spousal benefits (bank, pension, social security), or use it in passport/visa/documentation.

You can get your marriage registered even now by filing a joint application before the Marriage Registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (if both are Hindus). You will need wedding photographs, invitation card, witness affidavits and ID proofs. Once registered, you can update your Aadhaar and other documents. For your Streedhan, you need not file for separation or divorce. You can send a written notice or police complaint under Section 406 IPC or approach the Mahila Cell for recovery of Streedhan while continuing the marriage. You may also try mediation or counseling to resolve it amicably.

You can get both — marriage registration and recovery of streedhan — without filing for divorce or separation. 1️⃣ Marriage Registration: Even if the marriage was not registered, you can apply for registration under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (Section 8). Both husband and wife must jointly submit an application before the Marriage Registrar along with wedding photos, invitation card, and two witness affidavits. Once registered, you will receive an official marriage certificate, which can then be used to update your Aadhaar, bank, and other IDs. 2️⃣ Streedhan Recovery (without breaking marriage): Streedhan (jewellery, gifts, cash, or articles given to you at the time of marriage) legally remains your personal property. If your husband or in-laws are not returning it, you may file a written complaint to the local Mahila Thana or Protection Officer under Section 12 & 19 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. You can specifically request return of streedhan and protection orders while continuing the marriage. This ensures your legal rights and property are protected without initiating divorce proceedings.
