How to Check Divorce and Family Court Cases in Tamil Nadu?

02-Jul-2026 (In Divorce Law)
What is the procedure to check if a person has filed or is involved in any divorce or other family court cases in Tamil Nadu? Can a lawyer search pending and past matrimonial cases if the case number is not known? What details are required (name, spouse's name, address, etc.)? Can this be done through the e-Courts portal? What is the usual lawyer's fee for conducting such a search and providing the case details?

Dear Client, 1. Yes. A lawyer can search pending and disposed family court cases through the e-Courts Services Portal or by conducting a court record search in the concerned Family Court. If the case number is unavailable, details such as the party's full name, spouse's name, approximate address, district, and relevant time period help narrow the search. Results depend on the accuracy of the information provided, and not all cases may be searchable by name alone. Professional fees vary based on the scope of the search, the number of courts involved, and the time required. Thanks & regards, Priyanka Advocate Coimbatore

Yes. A lawyer can assist in searching pending or disposed divorce and other Family Court cases in Tamil Nadu. If the case number is unavailable, details such as the person's name, spouse's name, address, and probable court location can help. Searches may be done through the e-Courts portal and court records, subject to data availability. Professional fees vary depending on the scope of the search and verification.

For a contested divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act, the petition may be filed before the Family Court having jurisdiction over: (i) the place where the marriage was solemnized, (ii) the place where the parties last resided together, or (iii) where the respondent is presently residing. If the matrimonial home was at Perumbakkam and the parties last resided there, the Chennai Family Court having territorial jurisdiction over that area would ordinarily have jurisdiction. The wife's Aadhaar address alone is not conclusive; her actual place of residence and other jurisdictional facts are relevant.

In Tamil Nadu, it is often possible to determine whether a person is involved in a matrimonial or family court case even if the case number is not known, but the ease and completeness of the search depend on the court’s records and the information available. A lawyer can search using details such as the person’s full name, spouse’s name, approximate place of residence, the likely district where the case may have been filed, and, if available, the marriage date or other identifying particulars. The e-Courts portal may allow searches by party name for many courts, but its coverage is not uniform, and not all family court records or older cases may be searchable online; therefore, lawyers often supplement online searches with searches at the relevant court registry. The fee for such a search is not fixed by law and varies depending on the number of courts to be searched, the complexity of the search, and the advocate’s professional charges, so there is no standard or prescribed amount that applies across Tamil Nadu.
