Whether you submit to the jurisdiction of the court or not, what is important is what is the ground on which he has sought the divorce. If it is a no fault divorce, it won’t be recognised in India, if it’s a fault one (cruelty, adultery, desertion etc) then it would be so recognised. In either case it would not sustain in India if you are not able to carry out a decent defence – It’s surprising that you are not entitled to free legal aid, and any trial held without you being possessed of such means would be violative of principles of natural justice and hence not recognised in India.

It is permissible subject to some rules and regulation of the both countries law notions. If you are holding a UK domicile or permanent resident or habitual resident or living term of certain period that time UK courts exercise its jurisdiction over any foreigner as same as its nationals. So its divorce decree is recognize in Indian courts under procedural laws which is permits under some of parameters will not it may reject the foreign judgement.
