Advice regarding domestic violence and abuse

09-Nov-2023 (In Divorce Law)
I got married in Dec 2021 and then came to the US with my wife in Jan 2022. Ever since Feb 2022 my wife has been behaving erratically. She has frequent episodes of severe anger accompanied with screaming, yelling and verbal abuse. She has slapped me four times and threw cold drinks on me once. She threatens to call the police and my employer. She even threatens to commit suicide and on one occassion took 20-25 pills in her mouth but I took them out. She accuses me of having affair and constantly checks my phone, emails, chats. I have reported this to her parents but they have not done anything to stop her instead tells me to adjust with her. I feel extremely threatened and unsafe with her. Please help me with some legal advice.

as a first step I advice my clients to install close circuit TV camera (CCTV) on your house. then seek some medical help for her and get those documented. also report to the police about the physical abuse of yours at the hand of your wife. and without wasting any more time file a case of judicial separation where you elaborate every aspect of the case on your petition. ensure you have collected enough evidence meanwhile. keep record of the communications with your in laws and try to keep record of their replies thereto. I would think it would be easier for you to pursue your case in a foreign jurisdiction because the US laws are very alive and gender neutral to domestic violence. and any favourable order there would help you here as well in future. regards, Tanmoy Chattopadhyay, M.Sc (Net), LL.B (Delhi), Advocate, High Court, Calcutta.
