Role of medical practitioner in suspected cases of child abuse

22-Aug-2023 (In Criminal Law)
Hi, I am a physician. In Western countries, there are child & social welfare services to whom doctors can refer cases when they suspect that parents are not making medical decisions in the best interest of the child either because of religious reasons or because of irrational fears. Is there any such law in India? Who should we report such cases to? What details need to be provided to the authorities? What is the further role of the doctor after he refers such a case to authorities if such a facility is available? If such a facility is not available, how can the doctor relieve himself of the harassment by family members that refuse to consent to proper evaluation and treatment of a minor child's medical complaints?
