HelloI registered a fraud complaint at local Police station about a month back. I registered it through a paper copy and I got stamp and signature on it.After couple of days, I got a call from Police station. Both parties were called and the station-in-charge listened to both sides of story. He asked the fraudsters to submit his statement and said to me that I would get updates after a weekSince then I am following up on phone with a junior officer (who is a head constable, I guess) and he keeps saying that investigation is going on the submitted papers by the fraudster and he'll call me once it's doneI am aware that Police are busy with many cases and the officer does sound genuine. But, I haven't got any updates in a month. So, few points are loitering in my mind.I'll be grateful if you clarify these1. Should I meet station-in-charge and demand explanation? Isn't there any time boundary to give updates to complainant?nn2. I have no complaint number. Can I demand for one

Well, you should meet with the concerned IO (Investigation Officer) first, then kindly meet with the Incharge Police Officer of that Police Station where you have filed the complaint. If still your problems doesn't get solved, meet with the ACP or DCP to get your problems resolved.

See for complaints of such nature the police conducts preliminary investigation and then lodge an FIR. However, it doesn't take this much of time as you said. Better for you to meet the station house officer and ask about the status of complaint. If you see no progress then you may file complaint before the magistrate

In fraud cases, you should lodge FIR with the concerned police station and your complaint is registered with a FIR number, your statement is recorded and the copy of the complaint is given to you along with FIR number and your statement. If you don't have any complaint number itself, you have to go back and inquire about the complaint. Important to mention that on registration of a complaint, you get some acknowledgement wherein the registration number or inward number is stamped on your written complaint.
