Difference between motive and cause in law
Intention is the most important factor in deciding the culpability of any accused. Motive helps prove the entire story behind it.
Example- If a wife witnesses her husband engaging in infidelity (which she was suspecting from a long time), motivated by feelings of jealousy and betrayal she stabs him on his head and chest intending to sufficiently cause his death. Thus, here intention can help decide this act of hers as murder and in order to support such accusation the advocate shall present the story behind it.
Also, sometimes motive can be positive in nature. Eg- A poor mother stealing bread for her hungry kids. Thus, here the motive though is positive but is sufficient in fulfilling the ingredients of theft. But, the judge taking in account of positive motive can lessen the punishment.
