Defamation case against area MC saying my wife does not follow islam

Hi, My marriage is inter religion (my wife accepted Islam) and we were married since 2006. We got legal marriage certificate and the same is registered in mosque. Now an area MC has sent a letter to jamath complaining about my marriage and he said that my wife is not following Islam fully. he started defaming my parents and my family members. Is there any law where I can file a case against him and is there any way I can keep my parents away from this issue
What is the reason for his such remarks on your wife? Actually he is trying to raise a communal issue and trying to play hate politics in a society.
As an aggrieved person, if you have evidence about his false propaganda, you can first issue a legal notice to him condemning his unwarranted and undesirable activities against your wife instructing him to restrain from indulging in such illegal acts any further and seek compensation for passing such libelous and defamatory remarks, this notice may bring some relief failing which you may initiate a defamation case under criminal law u/s 499 and 500 IPC as a private complaint before a judicial magistrate court within the jurisdiction.
