Company's demo equipment got stolen in train & company asks to pay

I was carrying an equipment given to me by a company for demo purposes. However, the goods got stolen on the train. i have file an FIR for the same. However, the company wants me to pay the price for the demo equipment. How to go about this. am i mandated to pay the damages to the company for the stolen goods? the company has no insurance for the demo equipment.
Did you sign any paper work regarding borrowing and returning the said demo equipment.
