Coaching institute not refunding money
08-Jun-2026 (In Recovery Law)
I joined a private coaching for an entrance exam. Paid 70k for 10 months course. It's run by a married couple in Mumbai and I'm in Hyderabad. I Enrolled because they said it'll be like one-to-one teaching but I did not like their teaching at all plus they were very unstructured. I told them I want to discontinue after 3 weeks and asked for 63k refund (I was willing to pay them for the full month). They told me that refund will take time and have ghosted me completely for a month. What can I do?
If the coaching institute induced you to enroll by making specific representations regarding the nature of teaching and the actual services provided were materially different, unstructured, or deficient, you may have a legitimate claim for refund. The fact that you sought discontinuation within a short period of approximately three weeks and were willing to pay for the services already availed may strengthen your case.
Immediately preserve all evidence, including advertisements, course descriptions, payment receipts, emails, WhatsApp messages, recorded assurances, and communications regarding refund. Issue a formal legal notice demanding refund within a specified period. If the institute continues to ignore your requests, you may initiate appropriate consumer proceedings alleging deficiency in service and unfair trade practices, seeking refund, interest, compensation, and litigation costs.
The institute cannot indefinitely retain your money merely by avoiding communication, particularly if the promised services were not delivered in the manner represented at the time of enrollment.
