SECTION 273 IPC - Indian Penal Code - Sale of noxious food or drink

As per new Indian Criminal law, IPC Section 273 has been replaced with BNS Section 275 with effect from July 1, 2024.
(Upper limit of fine is increased from one thousand to five thousand rupees.)

Whoever sells, or offers or exposes for sale, as food or drink, any article which has been rendered or has become noxious, or is in a state unfit for food or drink, knowing or having reason to believe that the same is noxious as food or drink, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both.



IPC 273 in Simple Words

According to section 273 of the Indian Penal Code, if anyone knowingly sells or offers for sale any article as food or drink that is harmful or unfit for consumption, they can be punished with imprisonment for up to six months, or a fine of up to one thousand rupees, or both.
