Mental Abuse by in-laws and husband
04-Jul-2026 (In Family Law)
I have been under constant manipulation , isolation , gaslighting and mental abuse by my in-laws and husband. To the point i feel either i want to end this life or i want to end the marriage. We reached to a stage where i am no longer able to bear this mental abuse. Pls help with the way forward.
From your query, it appears that you have been subjected to continuous mental cruelty by your husband and in-laws. Mental harassment is recognised under Indian law, and you are not required to continue suffering in such circumstances. If reconciliation is no longer possible, you may seek legal remedies, including filing a complaint under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and, if appropriate, seeking divorce on the ground of cruelty. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, please immediately reach out to a trusted family member or mental health professional and do not remain alone. Your safety and well-being should be your first priority. Consult a local family lawyer with all relevant facts before taking legal action.
Dear Client,
I understand how painful and overwhelming it must feel to go through constant manipulation, isolation, gaslighting and mental abuse. Please know that you are not alone and help is available.
Firstly, your safety is the priority. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, please immediately reach out to someone you trust or call 14416 Tele-MANAS helpline for free mental health support. You can also visit the nearest hospital.
Legally, mental cruelty is a valid ground. You have the following options:
1. File a case under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. You can get protection order, residence order, maintenance and compensation.
2. File a complaint with police or Mahila Thana for cruelty under Section 84 of BNS.
3. File for Judicial Separation or Divorce in Family Court on grounds of cruelty.
Keep collecting evidence like messages, emails, medical records if any. You can also approach District Legal Services Authority for free legal aid.
I strongly recommend meeting a family law lawyer in person to discuss facts and choose the best option for you. You deserve to live with respect and dignity.
You can seek the appropriate remedy through court, you can file a case for domestic violence against your husband and in laws under the appropriate section and the relief and if you want to end your marriage if nothing works between you and your husband then you can also seek divorce based on the cruelty. Feel free to contact
In such a situation, the first priority is your safety and mental stability. If you are feeling that you may harm yourself, immediately move away from isolation, call a trusted family member or friend, and contact emergency help such as 112, local police, women helpline, or the nearest hospital/mental health professional. Do not remain alone with these thoughts. Mental cruelty, gaslighting, isolation, humiliation, threats, and continuous emotional abuse are serious forms of domestic abuse, even if there is no physical violence. You should start preserving evidence: messages, call recordings where legally permissible, emails, medical records, witness names, photographs, and a written diary of incidents with dates. Legally, you may approach the Protection Officer/Women Cell/Police Station and seek protection, residence order, monetary relief, and other remedies under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. If there is cruelty, harassment, intimidation, or dowry-related abuse, a criminal complaint may also be considered under applicable provisions of law. If the marriage has broken down beyond repair due to cruelty, you may consult a family lawyer for divorce/judicial separation on the ground of mental cruelty, along with maintenance, stridhan, residence, child custody, and protection orders, as applicable. Before taking any extreme step, remember that ending your life is not a solution; the law provides remedies to end the abuse and protect you. Take one immediate step today: contact someone trustworthy, leave the unsafe environment if necessary, and consult a lawyer/counsellor urgently. Your life is more important than the marriage.
