Me and my partner belong to two different religions. We don't want to convert to any one religion. So would prefer to register through special marriage. Would like to know should we register before getting married or after getting married. One of us is an NRI as well. So would like to know the details of how to register the marriage. If we marry in a temple and get a notice, can we register the marriage through special marriage rules? Here one of us is a Hindu so asking specifically for the temple.

Both the parties to the marriage must be Hindus to get married in a temple ( as per Hindu marriage act). Since either of you don't want to get converted to other religion , the only option for you to get married is through special marriage act. To get married under special marriage act, first you have to approach your local register office and apply for marriage registration. You get the required application form from the said office or you could even download the form. Now registar will display your intention of marriage in the notice board for anyone to raise objection. Usually no one will raise objection. After 30 days and before 6 months bride, groom and 3 Witnesses with their, ID card, age proofs etc must visit the register office to sign in the register for marriage. Usually on same day or on next day you will get your marriage certificate.
