Girls side cancelled the marriage can I recover my loss

My friend's godbharai ceremony took place in 2014. In 2015 the girl's side cancelled marriage. They extracted money from the boy in the name of girl's education and have refused to pay back even after cancelling marriage. The boy has proof in form of statement of online transfers and some bank receipts. What legal action can the boy take to recover the money from them.
It is good that you proof of payments made. You can certainly file a civil case for recovery of money. In case we have enough proof of the promises made and not kept even a criminal case can be made out against the party. It will depend on the other facts and circumstances.

you can file a criminal complaint of cheating 420, and 406 Ipc and the boy side should keep the records on file as an evidence of cheating and transferring of money and if their is any record of ceremony like audio, video then it can also be useful to support the other evidences.
