Domestic Violence by Boyfriend

Hi. I was subjected to verbal and physical abuse on multiple instances by my boyfriend (now ex boyfriend) between April 2018 to September 2018. My friends asked me to file an FIR but every time I tried to, he would cry and emotionally blackmail me not to. I think I am finally ready to do it, but I do not know how to go about it. Will an FIR against a boyfriend count as domestic violence since we were not married? Also, will my parents and employer get to know? What is the process once I file an FIR? There were two witnesses (his flatmates) who no longer live with him.
