You have to make a gazette publication with the proposed name and existing name in the prescribed format. For publication in Gazette, one has to comply with certain conditions like, publication in news paper, affidavit, submission of identity card etc. After the same is done, we have to approach respective department/university to change the name in each certificates like SSLC/CBSE, Degree certificates, Ration Card, Voters Id, Passport etc. For making change in all the documents, it will take 2 to 3 months approximately.

There is no legal elements involved as the name is a matter of personal choice; there is no Act or Rule as to how a person should be named. It is matter of personal choice. It is only that once a person has been known by a particular name, a name change thereafter should be duly published. Publication required to be carried out through Gazette Notification and/or advertisement in Newspapers.

However, change of name does not entail that the new name would be incorporated in the Certificates/documents.

By the way, is the proposed change because of real inconvenience or hassles or on cosmetic considerations?
