If you are yet to solemnise your marriage you can make an application under section 5 of special marriage act and your marriage would be registered upon completion of one month of your applying and you would be issued a marriage certificate by the marriage officer of the concerned jurisdiction. Documents required for making the application would be- matriculation certificate or birth certificate for age proof, aadhar card, voter id or DL for identity proof, 3 passport size photos ( applicable to both bride and groom; patta(ROR) along with holding tax receipt in case of own house or rent agreement showing a minimum stay of 1 year in case of rented house, latest electricity bill for residence proof (can be tendered by either the groom or bride).

Now there are two modes for procuring a marriage certificate in case the marriage has already been solemnized. One is moving an application under Section 15 of the Special marriage act, 1954 where in you have to apply and wait for 1 month for registering the marriage and getting the certificate. The documents required are the same as required in the earlier kind of court marriage as mentioned above along with couple of additional affidavits.

The other mode of marriage registration is the one day marriage registration wherein marriage is registered and certificate issued by the concerned municipal authority for eg if your permanent place of residence is BBSR then BMC is the concerned authority and if its Cuttack then its CMC. However, for marriages to be eligible for such mode of registration, either of the spouse has to have a permanent residence in the concerned municipality and both of the spouses have to be Hindus by religion, unlike marriages under Special marriage act where marriages are solemnized between parties irrespective of religion. The documents required in this type of marriage registration are the same as required above along with id proof of parents/guardian, affidavits, marriage invitation card of both sides, marriage photograph, patta/for, pauti/holding tax receipts for the year in which marriage was solemnized, challan.
