Which are the cities in which a married couple can file for a divorce

I am a Christian. I was born & brought up in Mumbai but I got married in Udupi, Karnataka State in 1997 (It was a Church marriage). I reside in Mumbai and all my documents like passport etc has my Mumbai address on it. I am planning to file for divorce since my wife has a serious mental illness since childhood (which was hidden from me) and it has got worse during the years and it has become hell living with her. I have not registered my marriage anywhere. I want to know if I should get the marriage registered before filing for divorce in a Mumbai court. And is there anything else I should know before filing for divorce?

You don't need registering marriage before filing for divorce. You can file divorce petition straightaway. The petition can be filed where you are living i.e. at Mumbai. There should not be any difficulty in filing petition at Mumbai court.

Sir,
Your Church must have given a certificate of marriage ,if not collected you can collect it from the church as all church keep records of the marriages solemnized.You can file for divorce in udipi and Mumbai if she is residing with you or both of you last resided together in Mumbai.

Yes, you can file for divorce in Mumbai since you are residing in Mumbai.there is no need to register your marriage before applying for divorce. You should start collecting evidence to prove that your wife is suffering from a mental illness like doctor's prescription, hospital records.
