Dear Madam, If Divorce happens the wife cannot retain the Streedhan or the value of it may be adjusted towards permanent alimony. Normally, compensation in respect of loss of salary of previous years cannot be claimed by the wife but she can claim maintenance etc from the date of petition. Such compensation may be included in the alimony.

Streedhan is a woman’s right and she need not return them. There are several aspects considered while passing orders in application for maintenance. Both parties will have to file an affidavit of assets and liabilities before the court which disclosed literally all details relating to the assets each spouse possesses. That way the court can determine if maintenance should be paid or not.

1. Yes, maintenance and alimony can be claimed, and the eligibility depends on the husband's current status. 2. Sthreedhan is considered the property of the wife
