Hello sir, for settling the case in the first hearing of domestic violence it will be difficult if it is not sent to yeh mediation by the court, if it is sent to the mediation it can be settled easily, also you need to file for divorce if it settles in mutual consent so that the settlement works and you will be free from this relationship. They might come to settlement if you have good advocate who can negotiate on your behalf to settle the case, also if they don't settle be prepared to counter them efficiently and aggressively otherwise they will try to take away and grab everything your life, money and peace.

in most cases it's not possible to reduce the amount you don't show what you want because your father in law will be misused as an agent if you want to keep some petion so use daily strategies and try to show that you are happy then only they will come to your amount untill that it's not possible so go ahed without settlement

In order to consider what is resonable, you will have to explore your income capacity, her lifestyle, any issues (children) her income earning capacity, lifestyle, future/current assets etc. This can happen with consent of both parties, or willingness of both parties to settle the dispute out of court.

Yes, counselling can help in settling the matter amicably if both parties are willing. It creates scope for negotiation and reducing demands. However, settlement depends on mutual consent, not pressure from family. Go prepared with a reasonable offer and clear terms.
