My sister who is unemployed is looking forward to staying away from her husband due to his inimical and hostile temperament. Can she demand maintenance/ alimony without filing for divorce? How difficult it is to get? What are the procedures?

Yes. Even a wife who is staying with her husband can claim for maintenance. But if she is qualified and became unemployed recently then the chances may be different. There is no need to file for divorce to get maintenance.

In this case, Yes can file a maintenance case without divorce petition Neither spouse is automatically entitled to spousal maintenance on divorce. ... The duty to support each other is the responsibility of both spouses and means that if, for example, a woman does not have the financial means to support herself, her husband has a legal obligation to support her, and vice versa.
