Can husband ask for Wedding expenses?

08-Feb-2026 (In Divorce Law)
Can my husbands family claim wedding expenses from my family if I file for divorce ? It was their wish to conduct wedding in their city , there were only 28 members from my family but many people from their side and they spent a lot, it was held during corona. My dad asked at that time but they didn’t tell any amount so my dad gave some lump sum amount but I fear that they might ask more if i file.

No, your husband's family generally cannot legally claim wedding expenses from your family if you file for divorce in India. Indian matrimonial laws typically do not have a specific provision to directly reclaim general marriage expenses.

Hi Madam, You are not mentioning reason for divorce. However if you filed Divorce petition on cruelty ground your husband family can't ask refund of marriage expenses, you can claim monthly maintainance or permanent alimony required documents are Marriage invitation card, marriage photo, adhar card and address proof. for filing petition and other legal assistance feel free to contact me. Claiming is one thing but court allowing it and awarding expenses is quite another thing. They can claim & get such expenses if grounds of your divorce petition is not based on any fault from their side. If you have a valid ground for filing for divorce the court will not tell you to give them expenses .

Dear Madam, Since they decided to host the wedding in their city and invite a large number of guests from their side, those costs are legally considered voluntary gifts or personal choices. They cannot retroactively turn those expenses into a debt for your family to pay. Just file Divorce and claim huge alimony also.
