Physical punishment to a student by a teacher

what if a teacher hits a student in India? can teacher beat student in india? what is the punishment for a teacher hitting a student in india? Can a student be given a hit with a wooden scale on his hand or leg or body ( not eyes, etc, ) or a slap or asked to knee / stand in the class or go out of the Classroom ? What is the legal physical punishment which can be given to a student ? If it cannot be given as per law ( Which law may please be informed ? ) and if a teacher beats, etc as mentioned above, what is the Punishment for the Teacher ? If a Teacher gives such a punishment can he arrested or will it be a Criminal Offence ? Has the matter to be reported by the Principal to Police ? Kindly guide please.
