My first cousin said very derogatory remark on whats app while having some discussion. This is a pure case of IPC 509 so far as me and my husband search on internet. But I need a legal advise what action can I take against him? He is a Dr in Patna, Bihar medical college and I am in Noida. What are my options send a legal notice or file a FIR?

Fir suits you more, as this way you’ll be reporting your cousin to the Police who will take cognisance of the whole case/episode and the offender will be punished if found guilty. Lodge a fir to set the criminal law into motion

Section 509 I.P.C:. whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman utters any word, makes any sound or gesture or or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may
extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

as you have told through your question that your cousin bill hi view on your WhatsApp number hat language and abusive and abusive words have been used against you as far as The only things is abusive if your cousin has only abused you then it will come under section 509 IPC and if you have threatened to kill you through WhatsApp and have insulted you then that section 504 506 IPC which you can file an FIR against him there is no separate provision for this in cyber law
