Is DUI (driving under influence) a criminal offence?

07-Apr-2023 (In Criminal Law)
Is DUI a criminal offence? I tried to look up and did not get any concrete answers and am very new to the area of law. I didn't find it specifically in the IPC. Also are all the DUI offenders criminals or do they have to be seperately booked under IPC or something to be labelled a criminal?

Dear Sir
It can be booked both under Motor Vehicles Act and Indian Penal Code. But it is not booked booked under IPC. So it is not criminal offense but only traffic offense as such no consequence on your future career. Be alert not to disclose such offences to any body.

If you are drunk under influence of alcohol you will be asked to pay fine by appearing before court or in police station. The offence comes under petty offences but in case you drove rashly and negligently and injured someone then you will be booked under IPC
