False testimony in criminal cases, known as perjury, is the intentional and willful act of making a false statement under oath during a judicial proceeding. This is a serious criminal offense that can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines. It undermines the justice system and can lead to wrongful convictions, which is why it is taken very seriously by the law.
