if he has issued any cheque to u with regard to principal amount you can present it for encashment and if the same is dishonored you can send legal notice and file a cheque bounce caae and also you can file money recovery suit

you can file a police complaint and FIR will be registered under section 406 and 420 of ipc and also in the meantime you can file a civil case for recovery of your money.
ipc cases are for punishment
recovery case is to recover your money along with interest.
